A Degree In Business Management – Throughout my life, I have gone through what I can only describe as “moments of interest” on various subjects. My parents, my brother and my wife can list many of these moments if you ask them. It’s just a part of me. Sometimes I will be interested in a certain topic. I will continue to be interested for a period of time from a few months to a few years. Although I am focused on this subject, I always want to learn everything I can about it. After I learn everything I want to learn about a subject, I move on to a new subject. This has helped me in my job in Information Technology (IT) because in IT. Technology is always changing, but you have to be interested in learning just to stay ahead.
In the spring of 2012, the thought of going back to college and getting a degree began to appeal to me. Sixteen years earlier, I had decided to drop out of college to focus full-time on the web hosting company I had started in the early days of the Internet with a friend. That eventually turned into a major career in I.T. but I never went back to school. I don’t regret it one bit.

Choosing a University: Fortunately, in the spring of 2012, when I began to seriously consider returning to school for a degree, there were a number of non-traditional college options available. I checked out the many offers available at the time. What I quickly learned is that there are many online degree programs that are not very good. In fact, some of them end up being outright scammers.

Many online schools are not locally accredited. Unaccredited schools may offer an excellent education, but some organizations will not recognize degrees from these institutions as legitimate. So attending a prestigious school in the area quickly became my priority. After all, if I’m going to put in the effort, I need an accredited degree from a reputable university in the area. After crossing off all the non-permit schools on my list, I began to focus on two other points.
The #1 priority for me is to find a program that is truly self-sustaining. Because I own and run a business, there are times when I work 60+ hour work weeks and don’t have much time for anything else. Other times, I might have a slow week where I can spend more time than usual on school work. So finding a program that is fast is key for me.
The #2 factor for me is price. Somehow in this crazy world we live in, we as a society have bought into the idea that borrowing a lot of money to go to college is normal and okay. I think if you get a degree that leads to a big salary, math can do this. However, if you go to an expensive school and run up tens of thousands of dollars in student loan debt and come out with little money, your future will be financially difficult. As a small business owner, I know it costs money. So while price isn’t my main concern, it’s definitely something to consider. Ultimately, I want to try to attend a college that I can pay for out of pocket as I go. After all, I was supposed to be a business manager. A good businessman should always seek a good profit – right?
I won’t go into all the details of my search, but I will say that it quickly became clear that Western Governors University (WGU) was the perfect fit for my educational needs. They are well supported, helpful and affordable.

In addition to obtaining permits, quickly and cheaply, WGU uses a “permission-based model.” This model is designed to measure your proficiency in a specific area, rather than the more traditional method of measuring how much time you spend studying the subject.
Here is a simple example of this. If you are taking a math class as a WGU student, you can demonstrate that you are competent in the subject matter covered by the class by taking a standardized test or creating a work product. some form (book / presentation / table). etc.) WGU will allow you to test or create a working product, pass the class and move on. WGU doesn’t care if it took you three hours or three months to learn. They measure your performance, not how long it took you to do the job well.
The performance based model sealed the deal for me. I am very person oriented and work oriented. I like to be told what the goal is and then let me achieve it. So the WGU version is perfect for me.
Enrollment: In early May 2012 I called and spoke with a WGU admissions counselor named Michael. Over the next few weeks Michael helped me through the application and admissions process at WGU. Start date. I admit, when I’m passionate about something, I can be a little impatient. I passed an entrance exam that focused on math and writing. I also got my WGU high school and college applications in right away, and did a few other things to keep the process going. I ended up only having one class in college.

Getting Started as a WGU Student: Michael soon turned me over to my “Student Mentor” named Nick. At the time, I didn’t know how useful Nick’s help would be to me. WGU uses an advising model where each student has a “Student Course” and each class has one or more “Teacher Courses.” Having experienced it myself, I can confidently say that this is an excellent model.
The student mentor primarily serves as a point of contact with the university. Whenever I have a problem related to my education at WGU and can’t figure out how to solve it on my own, I just call Nick and he will point me in the right direction.

Nick and I set up a weekly call schedule. Although our call is short (probably no more than 15 minutes) it is worth it. During each call, Nick and I discuss where I am at and what I need to focus on next. He improved my time by making sure I completed the course in the best possible order. When I’m so busy that I can’t devote much time to school, my weekly calls to Nick are a reminder to keep my work at WGU a priority. I am grateful to Nick for keeping me on track and out of trouble during my time as a student at WGU.
As I mentioned earlier, each course consists of one or more lectures by subject matter experts in the areas covered by the lecturers. To be honest, I contacted the tutor twice for “direct” help. Sometimes, this is in an online webinar, and other times it’s an in-person appointment. However, I use materials posted by faculty members in the WGU Community (WGU’s private student organization). Often they include videos or guides to help you concentrate on your studies. These resources are valuable. If you are an independent learner who thrives on your own, WGU offers everything you need.
WGU recommends that students spend 15-20 hours per week on schoolwork. This sounds like a great general guideline, but because of my work situation, the reality for me is that some weeks I spend over 40 hours in school, and other times I don’t go to school at all. Although I thought it was not at all, because WGU is really inspiring in itself, this worked for me.
Outlook: Before I started at WGU, Holly (my wife) and I had been planning a vacation spot for our family for years. Let’s face it, that 15-20 hours a week has to come from somewhere.
