Active Backup For Business Synology – UPDATE: 10/6/20 – Synology has announced the Active Backup for Business 2.2.0 trial program. It’s planned to be invite-only (since it’s not a public beta yet), so Synology will pick up participants it thinks fit the “profile” for this demo.

A recent addition to Synology’s collection of great apps and solutions includes a new version of Active Backup for Business.

In this article, I’ll think about the tool, how it can help you, and look at different scenarios where it can be implemented.

Synology Active Backup For Business Review And Walkthrough

Let’s be honest. How many times have you lost data because you didn’t have a backup? Everyone who uses a computer, tablet or even phone these days has at least something they want to save and never lose, right? With that in mind, it’s mostly about how you implement it, how much it costs, and why you should bother with it.

I usually get asked what is the difference between this and this backup package on Synology? Isn’t it the same function? How can I back up this and that etc.?

Before I continue, let’s get one thing straight. AB (Active Backup) is a backup tool for all your devices that contain data that you want to back up to your NAS as the final destination. With this in mind, do not combine AB with HB (Hyper Backup). HB is a tool that allows you to back up data on the NAS itself to another destination (such as another server, NAS, or the cloud).

So AB is a backup platform that allows you to backup your computers (Linux, Win and Mac – still available in 2020), servers and HyperV and VMware virtual machines with a single solution. In some scenarios, you can even perform agentless backups. File backup is one of them. It is possible to set the path from the NAS to the target data folder and back up the data without installing any AB agent tool. More on that later.

He can do a lot! Did I mention it’s free? By free, I mean that no matter how many customers you have, you don’t have to buy any licenses at all. Once you try it and see how well it works, you don’t need to spend more money on a backup solution than this one.

All jokes aside, what can AB do? Back up your entire computer for a complete bare metal recovery, back up specific files, back up virtual machines (both HyperV and VMWare), incremental and multi-version backups, administrative templates for each user or group that has access to AB, and much more. more.

In addition, AB has a user portal that allows all users to access backups and content without having to issue a ticket to the local help desk, which involves the IT department. This is a huge advantage for anyone (I’m sure there are people who will see the advantage) who work in mid-sized businesses.

In this section I will show the two most common scenarios with AB. File backup and full computer backup, as well as specific file recovery and full barebones recovery using PXE boot.

Active Backup Retention Policy Confusion

Let’s say you have several computers that you want to back up at the file level. Maybe just user directories or something along those lines. AB allows you to use this method according to the following steps.

And it is done. Now your job is ready to run manually or run on a schedule you set

Now that you have completed the backup, let’s see how you can restore a specific file from this backup job using the Active Backup Restore portal.

You can access the portal from the Active Backup > File Server section using the Open Recovery Portal button, or if you are already logged in to DSM, by clicking the Active Backup for Business Portal icon. Either way, the user interface opens

Depending on the user you are logged into the recovery portal with, you may see some, all, or none of the jobs that AB is currently processing. This can be changed using the “Show role” drop down menu at the top. In addition, you can select and list all tasks that a role/user has.

Now just find the task that suits you best, find the file and use the restore/download buttons in the top bar to download or restore it to its original location.

All tasks related to the backup and restore process and logs are located in the Active Backup Activity section

Please note that the recovery portal does not have a search option, only a filter option. So finding things can take some time if you don’t have knowledge about the place.

In the next part, I’ll talk about how to backup your entire computer and clone the same backup to a new computer using Synology Restore Media (in ISO format via PXE).

Now, unlike a file/folder backup, a full computer backup is not agentless. You must install the 32-bit or 64-bit version (depending on your computer) of Active Backup for Business Agent.

NOTE: Make sure you download the correct version using the wizard so you don’t have any problems with Active Backup client and server versions later when you need to restore

To start the process, you need to do 2 things beforehand. As the screenshot above shows, when you add a device to AB for a full backup process, you need to install the AB agent on that computer and create a template for that computer and the user (this is the DSM account) to back up at startup. point. It’s not 100% true since this is a template based on the admin group, but if you want to create a template that suits specific users, their needs (plan, number of versions, backup location, etc.), you need to create a custom template using the Settings section of the Active Backup dashboard.

After you install the agent and prepare the template, it’s time to connect to the computer with the agent and start the backup.

NOTE: Please note that this process can also be used online. If your AB instance has Internet access, you can enter your FQDN address in the server address field and create or restore your machine over the Internet.

NOTE: You can also set proxy settings (if needed) to also access the internet using the proxy button

NOTE: If your DSM account you use in this step has 2FA enabled, the agent will ask for it.

After configuring the task, your computer will be visible in the AB panel, as well as all running tasks.

After the backup is complete, you have two options. One is to use the recovery portal as in the first scenario to access the file/folder level backup and retrieve every file you might need.

The second option is to restore this backup as a brand new computer with all data on it.

When you restore your computer on a new computer, you can do it with a USB flash drive or DVD/CD recovery via ISO file (but who does that in 2019 anyway?). I will focus on the ISO method that runs on a computer via network boot (PXE).

You need a few things to make this work. First we need to create recovery media (USB or ISO) and then set up a PXE platform that will actually use the ISO file to boot the computer and connect to the Active Backup server.

NOTE: Please note that using the PXE boot method is optional and there is nothing wrong with using the USB method. In any case, you can restore the data locally or over the Internet.

See this tutorial to configure PXE boot. The PXE process is not covered in this tutorial.

To create recovery media, open Active Backup on the NAS and switch to the PC section. In the Recovery drop-down list, you will find the Create recovery media option.

You expect this to launch the wizard, but it doesn’t. You even get a link to a valid PDF document that covers the entire creation of Active Backup Media.

Basically, you need to download the installer to your Windows PC (currently not an option) and then use the wizard to create a USB stick or ISO file. This process will also automatically download the Windows Preinstall Environment (Windows PE) and the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK) (if they are not already detected on your computer), so you don’t have to search for them beforehand.

NOTE: An important point to mention here is that if you need to boot into legacy BIOS and not UEFI, you need to create an ISO
