Genesee County, Michigan – The Better Business Bureau often warns consumers about potentially objectionable messages from businesses. It now alerts businesses to potential solicitation emails from the BBB.
According to Melanie Duquesnel, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau of Eastern Michigan, which includes Genesee County, Eastern Michigan businesses have seen a significant increase in spam emails that suggest complaints to the BBB.
“Last week I received 24 emails from BBB about complaints about my business,” said BBB’s Southfield Regional Director. “I know I didn’t send it. It’s definitely spam.”

Duquesnel said the Better Business Bureau’s Eastern Michigan Territory office has had 100 to 200 reports of BBB-related computer spam in the past three to four days. BBB of Eastern Michigan covers all of Eastern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.
Duquesnel could not say if any of the suspicious emails specifically targeted businesses in Genesee County.
Duquesnel emphasized that these emails are spam, possibly viruses, and are not from the Better Business Bureau. She said the emails came from multiple sources, all of which appeared to be from “external locations.”
“Some act like Trojans and try to capture your data, and others shut down your computer and render it useless,” Duquesnel said. “It seems they have gone out of business and rejected the product from the market.”

She says that the best way to find the truth is to first look for grammatical errors that indicate a foreign origin. Another tip is to hover your computer mouse over the email link to see if the target is the BBB’s secure complaint system.
Duquesnel said another important piece of information that emails can be spoofed is from the Business Development Council or BBB from another state.
“A legitimate complaint email will come from the local BBB,” she said. “Also include the ‘from’ email address.
Duquesnel says any business that receives a fraudulent BBB complaint should not click on links, open attachments or respond to emails. Instead, he said it should be deleted quickly. She said anyone who clicked on the wrong link should delete it as soon as possible and run a virus scan immediately.
