However, I wanted to try it out a bit (of course!) and create a liquor store sign to match the theme of most of our decor…plus I had to dress like a witch to trick or treat and give out the candy. treatment!

I love doing outdoor projects like a front porch welcome sign, or even making an outdoor patio table. Working with wood outdoors always has some challenges, so I’ve created this tutorial to guide anyone in making outdoor wood signs, because there are so many uses, from displaying house numbers to seasonal decorations!
We use MDO plywood (medium density plywood) to make the signs. This plywood is safe and waterproof for outdoor use. Mainly used for outdoor signage and driveway or garage signs.
However, they are hard to find and may need to be ordered from a local construction company. Other options for wooden signs are pine, outdoor fencing, PVC panels and marine plywood. Do not use mahogany, ordinary plywood, MDF, or other porous wood surfaces that can easily rot.
I’ve included a printable step-by-step map at the bottom of this post, but I’ve also included some tips and how I completed the project in this section.

2. Preparation. Smooth out the cut edges and, if necessary, sand the top of the board gently for the best bond. Plywood usually doesn’t need to be sanded.
3. Color. I used gold and white exterior paint to incorporate various elements into the template. For exterior projects, I recommend sealing or painting the entire surface. If you don’t want to paint the entire surface, you can cover it with external polyurethane.
4. Hang the label. I found this homepage post at Love’s for $47. We used a large drill bit and hand chisel to drill holes to attach the PVC board from above. Finally, we attached the top using these eyes and carabiners.

5. Ground anchor. I didn’t plan on setting up this post year-round, so we found a deep post and hammered it into the ground. The top secures the studs well, but we can take them off whenever we want!
Other anchoring options include cementing the stakes into the ground or securing them with large pots filled with gravel.
This sign is part of our Halloween witch decorations featuring a witch and a dancing candle in one sitting, but it’s the only element that holds the whole style together. I also made the sign reversible so it has a Santa theme on the back so it’s super fun!

Water resistant plywood such as marine plywood or medium density plywood (MDO) for markings and flat surfaces. PVC “wood” is also an excellent choice, as it will never rot, deform, or become attractive to insects.

Paint is one of the best sealants as it provides the highest protection against UV degradation and moisture. However, sealing is only as good as the paint itself. If the paint starts to peel or peel, the seal will fail.
Exterior polyurethane can be applied to raw wood or oil based paints. It has a penchant for amber, which gives it a warm, rustic look. While exterior paint does not require a sealer, polyacrylate or water-based sealers work best for water-based stains and all types of paint. Sealers help paint last longer and reduce weathering.
