Sonos launched Radio HD on Thursday, a radio service that features specially curated content like Dolly Parton’s Taylor Radio.
The service includes over 45 genre- and artist-curated stations in lossless FLAC (16-bit/44.1kHz) and adds to the existing free Sonos Radio. Radio HD is initially available in the US and UK and can be purchased for $8 (£8) a month after a 30-day free trial.
The $8 SiriusXM Essentials streaming service can be heard on computers, phones and smart speakers, while music-based services can only be heard on Sonos speakers. Since Radio HD is limited to users with speakers (although Sonos can use headphones), it seems to have limited appeal, especially compared to other $10 streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music.

The company says it created the new service because half of listening time on Sonos speakers is spent streaming radio. “Our commitment to providing services that provide a better customer experience and empower our music streaming service partners to showcase their best content is just the beginning,” said CEO Patrick Spence.
