This experience, along with his encounters with many students during his own teaching career, led to his lifelong commitment to helping students navigate the difficult transition they face as they begin their college careers. Professor Feldman, who received his doctorate in psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is now vice chancellor and professor of psychology and brain sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He is the founding director of POWER Up for Student Success, a first-year experiential course for new students.
Professor Feldman’s proudest professional achievement at UMass is winning the college’s Distinguished Teaching Award. He was named a Hewlett Teaching Fellow and Senior Research Fellow in Online Instruction. He has taught courses at Mount Holyoke College, Wesleyan University, and Virginia Commonwealth University. Professor Feldman is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is a Senior Research Fellow and Fulbright Award winner and author of more than 200 research articles, chapters and books. His books, some of which have been translated into Spanish, French, Portuguese, Dutch, Japanese, and Chinese, include Enhancing the First Year of College: Research and Practice; Understanding Psychology, 12/e; and development over the life course, 7/e. His research interests include the study of honesty and truthfulness in everyday life, the development of nonverbal behavior in children, and the social psychology of education. His research was funded by grants from the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research.
As the last of his three children to graduate from college, Professor Feldman occupied his spare time with very good cooking and serious, but unacknowledged, unrefined, piano playing. He also likes to travel. He lives with his wife, a psychologist by training, in a house overlooking the Holyoke Mountains in western Massachusetts.
