The three flags on the postage stamp, reminiscent of the 50 flags that surround the Washington Monument, are arranged in a column. I paint with gouache on a gesso board. Three separate images of the same flag were taken as reference at a few second intervals and these images were combined into a composite image. A flag flying in the wind from a low angle evokes respect and reverence. Laura Stutzman is a stamp designer and illustrator. Art director is Ethel Kessler.

The stamp was issued by Israel Post, Israel’s postal operator, on Sunday, May 16, 1948, the first working day after Israel’s declaration of independence was a Saturday holiday.

Early Israel issued stamps depicting Jewish holidays, Jerusalem, Petah Tikvah, the Negev, the Maccabean Convention, and the Bond of Liberty. Every year, Israel hosts a festival to mark the Happy New Year. The 1948 festival series featured “Flying Scrolls”.
