The three flags on the postage stamp, reminiscent of the 50 flags that surround the Washington Monument, are arranged in a column. I paint with gouache on a gesso board. Three separate images of the same flag were taken as reference at a few second intervals and these images were combined into a composite image. A flag flying in the wind from a low angle evokes respect and reverence. Laura Stutzman is a stamp designer and illustrator. Art director is Ethel Kessler.

The stamp was issued by Israel Post, Israel’s postal operator, on Sunday, May 16, 1948, the first working day after Israel’s declaration of independence was a Saturday holiday.

Israel had 64 post offices in 1950, expanded to 114 in 1960, and 178 branches in 1970 after the Six Day War.
In 1955, two settlements in the Negev launched the Red Truck, Israel’s first mobile post office. By 1990, Israel operated 53 flights to 1,058 destinations, including Israeli settlements in the West Bank and Gaza.

Due to hyperinflation, in 1982 and 1984, Israel issued stamps with fewer olive branch designs. These stamps were said to be disastrous but attractive because both the government and customers did not have to update their postage.
In the 1990s, Israel experimented with voiding machines for mailing labels (flank labels). The Klussdorf machines and their labels were withdrawn from service in 1999. 22 color designs, including 12 tourist destinations and holiday season designs.
The Israel Defense Forces provide postal services to its soldiers. For example, in 1973, during World War II, the Israel Defense Forces Post Office issued a series of postcards with caricatures to boost morale. A postcard shows Israeli cartoon characters coming to Damascus and raining hail and fire on the pyramids of Egypt (Exodus 9:24) and “the day of judgment given here”.
Early Israel issued stamps depicting Jewish holidays, Jerusalem, Petah Tikvah, the Negev, the Maccabean Convention, and the Bond of Liberty. Every year, Israel hosts a festival to mark the Happy New Year. The 1948 festival series featured “Flying Scrolls”.
