In the spring of 2023, HBO Max will merge with Discovery Plus to form a new streaming service designed to bring the best of both platforms. However, it is not yet clear how much the new service will cost or how existing subscribers will be affected.
In its current form, however, HBO Max remains a solid standalone streaming service. Its wide variety of popular films and critically acclaimed series make it a strong competitor in an increasingly crowded digital entertainment market.
Below, we’ve laid out all the basics to help you decide if HBO Max is right for your needs, including pricing, content selection, and what the Discovery Plus integration could mean for members.

You can subscribe to HBO Max through HBOMax.com. You can also subscribe directly through select partner services, including Amazon Prime Video, AT&T, DirecTV, Spectrum, Hulu, and YouTube TV.

HBO Max costs $16 per month for ad-free streaming or $10 per month for ad-supported streaming. The current unannounced price is a result of the $1 price increase that took effect on January 12th.
Members who sign up for the $15 per month rate will start paying the $16 rate on the next billing cycle on or after February 11th.

Subscribers can save up to 20% by signing up for an annual subscription to either plan. The ad-free annual plan is $150/year, and the ad-supported annual plan is $100/year.
The ad-supported HBO Max plan includes almost everything you get with an expensive ad-free plan. However, the cheaper plan lacks the option to download content for offline viewing, and streaming is limited to HD quality instead of 4K.
Amazon Prime Video now offers HBO Max as an add-on channel. Prime subscribers can add HBO Max to their membership for an additional $16 per month. Amazon previously pulled HBO Max as a channel, but brought the service back in December 2022.
Although HBO Max initially offered a free trial through its website, that promotion is no longer available. However, there is one answer. Amazon Prime Video members can get a free one-week trial of HBO Max if they join the service as a Prime Video channel. The trial period is available to new HBO members only.

HBO Max can be streamed through its official website and the HBO Max app. You can find the app on Apple, Android, Roku, PlayStation, Xbox, Amazon Fire TV, and Chromecast devices, as well as smart TVs from LG and Samsung.
Those who join HBO Max directly through a partner service, such as Hulu, will be able to access regular HBO content through the partner service’s app. However, to watch HBO Max exclusives, you still need the separate HBO Max app.
Warner Bros. Discovery has announced plans to merge HBO Max and Discovery Plus into one streaming service. The new platform does not have an official name yet, but reports indicate that it could be called Max. The joint service is expected to launch in the spring of 2023.

Ad-supported and ad-free plans are expected, but pricing has yet to be announced. It’s also unclear how existing HBO Max or Discovery Plus subscribers will transfer to the new platform.
Discovery Plus currently costs $5 per month with ads or $7 per month without ads. The service features shows from Discovery, TLC, Animal Planet, Food Network, and HGTV, along with several original series.
Warner Bros. During its second-quarter 2022 earnings call, Discovery detailed how HBO Max and Discovery Plus complement each other by appealing to different demographics. Once combined, the new service will have the potential to appeal to a wide range of subscribers by offering all of the scripted HBO Max content and all of the unscripted Discovery Plus titles.
HBO Max includes access to new and classic HBO shows, from “The Last of Us” and “The Sopranos” to “Succession” and “House of the Dragon.” The library also houses the cable channel’s revolving movie series. On top of all that, HBO Max offers additional Warner Bros. titles. Discovery catalog, plus all-new originals.

However, the HBO Max catalog is not permanent, and the service has been known to remove content with little notice. For example, recent cost-cutting measures have led to the cancellation of shows like “Westworld” and shorts from the “Looney Tunes” franchise.
