So why go through all the trouble of making your own coconut milk when you can just buy a carton? Well, there are several reasons why you should do it yourself. Here are just a few.
How To Make Homemade Coconut Milk
Today I am sharing two ways to make coconut milk. Each of them has its advantages, which I will talk about in a moment.
Homemade Coconut Milk In A Minute
Let’s start with the easiest (and cheapest) way to make coconut milk, with grated coconut. Only 2 ingredients are needed: water and coconut (dried)!
You want to make sure you buy desiccated unsweetened coconut. Simple bags of sugar won’t cut it here. You want it to have one ingredient: desiccated (or desiccated) coconut. I buy shredded coconut because it’s great in curries, stir-fries, salads, etc. and the kids love it as a snack. But you can also use small coconut flakes.
Put the coconut in a blender and pour very hot water. You don’t want the water to boil. It will be bad for your blender. You just want it very hot or slightly hot. Does this make sense?
Place the lid on the blender and cover it with a kitchen towel to prevent it from spilling or burning. Mix everything for five minutes.
Homemade Coconut Milk & Coconut Flour
Squeeze out as much water as possible. Make sure the water you use is warm. You can squeeze out the water with tongs to prevent it from burning.
If you want, you can save the coconut meat and slowly add it to smoothies, baked goods, etc., or just compost. I think I’ve had enough of the meat, so I just throw it away or compost it.
The second option is more important, but boy is it always fun. You will need a fresh, ripe (brown) coconut and water.
Start by drilling holes in the coconut “eyes”. You can do this with a corkscrew, screwdriver, etc. I find a screwdriver is the easiest way to do this. Just hold it above the eye and tap gently with the hammer until it pierces the flesh. I usually find that only one or two eyes are big enough to pierce. But that’s okay.

Now pour the coconut water into a bowl or sink. I think the juice from the ripe coconut tastes better, so I just throw it away.
I have found that the easiest way to crack a fresh coconut is with a hammer. I tried using the back of a large knife and it didn’t work. I also recommend holding the coconut in your hand rather than hitting it while it’s on the counter. Just fly everywhere if you can. Remember that your hand absorbs the force of the impact, so you can use gloves or handle the coconut with a kitchen towel. It may sting a bit when you hit the coconut.
Also note that the coconut breaks easily when it hits the equator. Now squeeze the coconut firmly until it splits all the way.
The next step is to separate the meat from the skin. If you’re lucky, the meat will come out when you break the coconut in half. If not, put half of it on a kitchen towel and hit it with a hammer a few times.
How To Make Home Made Coconut Milk
This makes it easier to remove the meat from the shell. Think of it like crushing a clove of garlic so you don’t have to worry about removing the skin. Keep pounding the coconut if you can’t get the meat out. Be careful not to damage your calculator. You can also do it abroad.
Or you may need to use a knife to remove the flesh from the shell. Just be careful not to cut yourself.
I like to wash the coconut meat because it usually has the husks on it. There is no need to remove the brown “skin” from the back of the coconut meat. But if you wish, you can peel the vegetables with a peeler. This makes white coconut milk, but it takes more work in my opinion.
Put the coconut meat in a blender and pour hot water. Mix for 3 minutes.
Easiest Homemade Coconut Milk
Squeeze out as much water as possible. You’d be surprised how much you get out of white coconut.
I usually take 1 1/2 to 2 cups of coconut milk from a fresh coconut, which is about the same as canned coconut. I pay about $2 per coconut, so it’s more expensive than using desiccated coconut, which costs only $0.70 per “jar”.
Making coconut milk from fresh coconuts is work. But I think every coconut lover should try it at least once. The milk you get is not the same as any canned coconut milk. It tastes fresh (well, yes).
I like both ways to make coconut milk, but desiccated coconut has several advantages: it’s easy, cheap, and convenient. You can keep a bag of thawed coconut in the fridge to make coconut milk whenever you want.
Homemade Coconut Milk (vegan)
The fresh coconut recipe wins because of the coolness, and the taste is something to be aware of. It’s not just that dry coconut milk tastes good (my son loves it), it’s. Fresh coconut milk has a different flavor, so if you prefer a milder coconut milk, go for the refined coconut method.
As I said, both methods produce milk that is the same as what you would get from a can. You can dilute the coconut milk by adding more water, but keep in mind that it will be “lighter” than “regular” coconut milk.
