99% of photographers never plan to become a business owner. It might be better for them to say that they are freelancers and get paid for the work.
They have a high level of confidence in their photography business, but feel that they are mediocre, at best, in the work. If you’re anything like me, photography has always been a haven from academia. I’d rather express myself or talk to a camera than sit in class.

I like to call it MVB because it’s the size and scale needed to cover the cost of your equipment and other expenses (listed below) up to your spaghetti number (the amount you need to live off if you eat spaghetti every night).

Equipment does not matter. You want me to tell you what equipment to buy because in your subconscious mind you believe that if you had the equipment that the best photographers use, you would be as successful as they are.
But don’t be sad. We do this in almost every area of our lives. Shelves full of unread books, cupboards full of unused clothes and cupboards full of cooking utensils we never use. We got it because we wanted a shortcut.

Let’s talk for a moment about websites. As a photographer, you are in the customer service business. This means that potential customers will judge your image based on the quality of your website. If you’re doing your SEO, content marketing, and social media right, your website is one of the first important points of contact between you and a potential customer.
In addition to a pretty site (Zenfolio or Smugmug are also options), it should have good on-page SEO options, so I tend to use WordPress over other themes.
Breaking Into Business

Your skills as a photographer are the most important part of getting started, but once you start a photography business, the game can change quickly. Sole Proprietor – This one is the easiest, but it also leaves you the most vulnerable. If you are sued for a reason, they can track down all of your personal belongings. Your home, your cars, even your Cal Ripken Jr. collection. your own. Baseball card (no? Another one just me, then). If you care about yourself and your future and want to be a professional, this is not for you.
How To Start A Successful Photography Business
Limited Liability Company (LLC) – Ah, we’re talking now. The LLC separates your liability for business and personal assets. There is some paperwork to file in your state, but if I remember correctly since I started my LLC you can do it online in most states. It doesn’t matter what the name of your photography LLC is, just don’t make it funny if it has to print papers in the future.
S-Corp – As a sole proprietorship imaging company, there is no reason to consider this expensive and more complicated option today. In the future, this may give you a better tax situation, but if you want to start, don’t worry about it and get an LLC.
