My time in Paris can be described as life changing. I majored in studio art with a minor in French at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and I knew I wanted a program that combined all of my interests into one, so when I entered the IES Paris Studio Art Program, I knew that he was… found a perfect match. To say that I was nervous at the beginning is an understatement. I was worried about expanding the language, making friends, if I would get along with my host mother, etc… But after a week in the new house, my worries began to fade away. I took painting and drawing classes in a fancy Parisian studio with local Parisians, my host mom was one of the kindest people I’ve ever met (pictured from my bedroom window) and many made friends with me. Who do I keep in contact with? On top of that, my French improved by leaps and bounds. I wasn’t anywhere near fluent and had no skills at the start of the show, and even though my show was half-baked due to the global pandemic, I can now say that I feel comfortable having a serious conversation. French. (Of course I’m still a mess, but I’ve improved a lot.) The cultural tours were structured and a lot of fun, and we got to see some really amazing places that I never would have been able to go to if it wasn’t for IES there would be, including a wine and champagne tasting. I recommend this program to one and all. One thing I recommend is doing some research beforehand to learn about non-touristy things to do while in Paris. Also, start saving your money now. Oh really. There are so many things to do, and most of them cost money (but some of my favorite things don’t work out, like walking the streets and going to 59 Rivoli). Another thing is Paris (maybe all of France, but I don’t know) expensive concerts are very rare, even for famous musicians, there is a law against charging more than the ticket price. AND! On your IES student ID, if it says “Histoire de l’Art”, also known as “History of Art”, you can enter many museums (including the Louvre and Musée d’Arcy) for free!
Student’s Guide To Studying Abroad
I threw myself in front of the Louvre. I had food poisoning at a seedy restaurant the night before and I was walking around the next morning and just threw up. A truly wonderful moment.
The overall experience was great. My landlady was lovely and Paris is a lovely city. As far as academics, there were various marketing classes and other business and history classes. Take an art history class if you can, my favorite was. Qualifying was generally a joke, getting below a B was hard. The program is limited; When I attended it had over 150 students, the social events grew rapidly, but overall it’s good to make lifelong friends. which i did
There is a metro line called 6. In spring, around noon, continue near the Sèvres-Lecourbe station (which is relatively close to the IES station) and head to Etoile (Arc de Triomphe). Make sure the window seat.
When I say this show is the best thing that’s ever happened to me, that would be an understatement. Paris is, above all, the most beautiful city in the world. With such a rich culture and so many gastronomic varieties at your fingertips, how can you not fall in love? The program I attended was a lot of fun and I was lucky to meet so many other students from all over the United States. I still talk to my foreign friends every day! I stayed with a host family who really helped me with my language skills and now I am almost fluent in French. I was very lucky to have this experience and I highly recommend it!

I really liked this program. Every faculty member was always very helpful, helping us with any practical or personal problems we had while there. They also made an obvious effort to get to know each student and went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable, knowledgeable, and happy. I loved every class I took. While studying international relations, I feel that the classes I have taken at IES have honestly given me a deeper involvement in many ways that classes at my home university sometimes lack. The faculty and staff also organized more than enough activities to help us get to know Paris and experience the city in a way that we would not have been able to otherwise. From my French classes to my personal interactions with the faculty, as well as my assignments, my proficiency and comfort in the French language increased considerably. I can honestly say that my months at IES were the happiest months I’ve experienced in college and my only regret is that I couldn’t stay the whole year.
My study abroad experience in Paris was absolutely wonderful. From the beginning, my partner and I collaborated and made other friends in directing. I visited many wonderful countries and learned a lot about their differences.
