Klm Boeing 787-9 Business Class – KLM Royal Dutch Airlines operates two types of Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Unlike KLM’s Boeing 777s, all of these Dreamliners have a convertible 1-2-1 herringbone in World Business Class. In my opinion, this is a big improvement to KLM’s strong World Business Class product. Me, I flew KLM World Business Class on the upper and lower deck of a Boeing 747. I recently flew from Chicago to Amsterdam on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Currently, KLM has 13 Boeing 787-9 aircraft. In this review, I will share my experience with this flight, including my thoughts on the Air France-KLM lounge in Chicago.
I booked this flight for 29,000 miles as part of Flying Blue’s November 2019 promotional rewards. By choosing Brussels as my destination, I paid 26,500 miles and €218.95 in taxes and fees (about 236.61 USD).
Klm Boeing 787-9 Business Class
There are KLM brands at O’Hare International Airport in Terminal 5, the airport’s newest terminal. I got here around 14:00 as the check-in opened about 3 hours before the flight. After queuing in the Sky Priority passenger line, I presented my passport for the agent to start the check-in process. All my trips were printed on one ticket.

Terminal 5 wasn’t too busy at 2pm so I got through security quickly. Most flights depart in the evening so it gets crowded before 6pm. Once airborne, I headed to the Air France-KLM lounge between gates M7 and M8 on the left side. In addition to Air France-KLM and SkyTeam Elite Plus passengers, priority ticket holders also have access to this lounge.
The lounge is open daily from 8:15am to 12:00pm, although Priority Pass is closed from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. When I got in the lounge was full of KLM flights and Air France was leaving in 2 hours. The seating area was simple but organized and I loved the view of the planes.
The buffet offers a good selection of food and drinks. However, I did notice that there was plastic food, something I don’t usually expect at an airport. Luckily there was Taittinger Champagne so I grabbed a glass and sat by the window to watch the planes. A little later I also saw the KLM Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.
Noticing that the entry process was about to begin, I went to the M8 gate. It took a long time to start the trip and the trip was completed due to yesterday’s trip cancellation.

I boarded the plane through the second door on the left and was greeted by the staff. My flight was operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The World Business cabin has 30 seats arranged in 8 rows in a 1-2-1 herringbone configuration. Like the Vietnam Airlines A350 Business Class cabin, these seats are manufactured by Zodiac. Unlike most of today’s new business class cabins, the KLM Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner has overhead bins above the middle seats.
In addition, the house was fresh thanks to the blue color of the chairs. The house quickly filled up, but luckily I was able to take a few more photos. Middle seats face each other and are best for those traveling together, while window seats are best for those traveling alone.
I sat in seat 5A, a window seat without a window. Before I could take my seat, the flight attendant offered to take my coat. I found a pillow and blanket on my seat as I waited for a pair of powerful noise canceling headphones in the mirrored warehouse. I like the blue design of the seats because it is a different color than the cabins of other airlines. The tray table is located to the left of the seat. Click the button to expand. There is an armrest on the right side of the seat, which you can raise to increase comfort. Like most herringbone cabins, the in-flight entertainment screen faces from the front seat. The cabin is small compared to the rear seats in the Boeing 777.

To the left I found the in-flight entertainment controls and a reading and seat light, while the USB and power plugs were under my seat. I don’t like the seat controls where you press a button.
A flight attendant came into the room a few minutes later and asked the passengers if they wanted a drink before the flight. I had a choice between water, orange juice or champagne. I decided on a glass of wine. Snacks and refreshments were also provided.
The box came from Zantaminia and was well packed. I received a pair of socks in the colors of the Dutch flag, a mask, a toothbrush and toothpaste, earplugs, a pen, eye cream and a lip brush.
After the second glass of champagne, all passengers were on board. Yesterday it was canceled and all seats were taken in business class. We left before sunset.

About 30 minutes after takeoff in Boston, the seat belt signs went off and I got my seat in the best position. Then the flight attendant asked me what I would like to drink before my meal. Based on my previous experience with KLM, I decided to fly with Flying Dutchman. It was served with some lentils. I really wanted to eat some cheese, but due to import regulations, the amount of cheese on board was very limited. The plane took off so I could enjoy a cheese plate for dessert.
While I was enjoying my cocktail, the flight attendant came to my seat and discussed the dinner options. It was done in an unusual way which I always like KLM. Then my schedule ended. I got avocado and salad with olive oil. My favorite thing about KLM is the traditional Dutch stuff like the salt and pepper fillings. I chose the lobster bisque as an appetizer. Then he brought me bread. To drink, I decided to switch to Maison Barboulot Pinot Noir 2018.
The lobster bisque didn’t taste bad, but I didn’t like the salad. For the main course, I can choose one of three options. I went for the pesto tortellini served with baby spinach, green beans, roasted tomatoes and walnuts. Two other options are chicken and beef. The food was below par in my opinion, but I can’t complain. The show was good, especially the Delftware design. However, unlike other airlines, KLM offers everything on a plate in business class.
After the plate was cleared, dessert was served. As I mentioned above, I wanted to try some cheese on this flight, so I decided on a cheese plate. I asked for a red wine refill, but the flight attendant told me I could switch to the delicious Taylor’s Late Bottled Vintage Port 2013. The cheese plate includes a variety of cheeses such as Camposola Blue, Dubliner and Camembert. It was served with raisins, biscuits and jam. Other dessert options are chocolate and fruit petit fours and a macaron.

I really liked the cheese. When I decided to have another cup of port, I was presented with a house-shaped chocolate bar. Dutch classic on the plane! I also got a bottle of still water.
After dinner I went to the bathroom. KLM has two bathrooms on its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, both located in the front of the cabin. The interior is beautifully designed with Dutch buildings.
When I got back to my seat, I decided to sleep for a few hours before breakfast. You can put the seat in the bed completely straight. Apart from the narrow track, it is comfortable to lie on the seat. I saw the fun on the plane too. The screen is very big and I found a lot of movies, series and music.
I woke up about 1.5 hours before landing and noticed that it was almost time for breakfast. There is only one option to choose from: continental breakfast. Contains coconut chia oatmeal, fresh grapes, smoked salmon, cream cheese, cucumber, poached egg and chicken. In addition, I received warm croissants and rolls. For drinks I went for cappuccino and orange juice.

After breakfast, the group came to a house with famous Dutch houses. KLM does this on all World Business Class flights and I would like more airlines to do it.
