The Legal Internship in the Legal Studies Program allows students to gain legal experience by working in an approved internship, such as a district or district attorney’s office or a private law firm.

Students must enroll in PLGL 426 and work 160 hours in an approved internship to fulfill legal duties. Before enrolling, you will need to contact the Placement Guide to verify eligibility.

Law students must complete at least 18 semester hours of law credit to be eligible for the practicum program.

Teachers will verify student eligibility for the internship. If qualified, the student will meet with an internship advisor to discuss the internship. Afterwards, students will be granted permission to enroll in specialized courses.

After an initial meeting with the Internship Mentor, the student will start looking for an Internship Sponsor. Students will be responsible for contacting various organizations and arranging interviews with potential sponsors. All interviews must be completed by the first week of college. If a student is unable to find an internship after careful searching, the Internship Guide will assist students in obtaining an internship.

Students submit potential sponsor’s contact details to the Internship Guide for approval. During one week, the Internship Mentor will contact the potential sponsor to discuss internship policies and program expectations. Teachers will notify students of the final approval status of potential sponsors. If the sponsor is approved, the student will meet with the practicum advisor to review the practicum documentation. The Program Internship Agreement is then sent to the approved sponsor for signature.

A student is required to attend class meetings at a pre-set date and time during the semester in which he is enrolled in the law program. Students must attend all class meetings. Students must verbally summarize the internship experience at each meeting so that the program director can assess progress, assignments, and identify any issues. Practical assignments are also assigned and assessed during class meetings.

Students and sponsors are encouraged to contact the practicum mentor at any time during the practicum. If there are problems that cannot be corrected, the internship teacher will arrange students to practice in other internship units.

The following courses may be completed at Collin County Community College, Dallas College, El Centro College, or any university or junior college with an ABA-approved law program, and transferred to A&M-Commerce for credit:
