After switching to Apple Macs for over a decade, I only recently decided to return to the Windows PC camp to scratch my gaming itch once again. With both systems surrounding my desktop, I grew tired of using multiple keyboards and mice, so I quickly focused on finding a single mouse that would run both my Apple Mac and Windows PC systems. The Logitech MX Master 3 Advanced Wireless Mouse caught my eye and seemed like the perfect solution to clean up the clutter of the many systems on my desk.

After a decade of using the low-profile Apple Magic Mouse and then upgrading to Apple’s rechargeable Magic Mouse 2, the MX Master 3’s grip feels a bit heavy. You could probably stack 3 Apple Magic Myces on top of each other and get close to the overall height of the MX Master 3. If you’re a low profile mouse lover, the MX Master 3 might not be for you, but for those hoping to make a fir. at my desk, I stay.
Setting up MX Master 3 is very easy. If you have a desktop or laptop with Bluetooth, you can enable the mouse and search for it in the Bluetooth settings to pair it. Alternatively, you can connect a USB Unifying receiver to an available USB-A port. Once paired, the first of three system options lights up at the bottom of the mouse. The buttons below this indicator allow you to click and switch between the different systems you want the mouse to control. Connecting to my second system is as easy as selecting option 2 and then linking the mouse to my second system.
Once linked, you will want to download and install the Logi Options software. On the Mac, I had to find and download it manually, but on the PC a small window appeared asking if I wanted to install it. After installing the Logi Options software, you can explore all the features of this advanced wireless mouse, as well as customize its buttons and functions.
On top of the mouse is the new MagSpeed electromagnetic scroll wheel. This new invention of the traditional scroll wheel is not only almost silent to operate, but it is solid and heavy to the touch, with every little roll you can feel the notch. The main additions are the electromagnetic function and the ability to smoothly switch between gradual and continuous scrolling, depending on how fast you scroll the wheel. Spin it fast enough and the magnet will allow the wheel to move freely, allowing you to scroll through the pages of the screen faster – 1,000 lines per second, in fact. You can enable this feature or let it scroll permanently by pressing the small button nearby. I found that in the freewheel setting I was able to scroll much faster compared to the gestures on my Magic Mouse 2, which is very convenient when browsing the web.

Other mice feature the standard buttons you typically see on computer mice on the market today. The two large L and R keys have the right length and click depth, so people with short or long fingers can easily reach and operate them. On the left side we have two rather narrow forward and back buttons. Although they are narrow, they sit very well on my resting thumb and allow quick and easy access without lifting my thumb too far to reach them.
Finally, there’s a similar chrome scroll wheel above the back and forward buttons. Its functionality will vary depending on the program and platform you are currently using. In a browser window, you can switch between tabs by turning the wheel back and forth. In Microsoft Word, you can zoom in and out on a page. In Microsoft Excel or Apple Numbers, you can scroll horizontally through a large spreadsheet of data. There are many features to choose from and custom options can be configured globally or per application. For example, in Photoshop you can set the size of the scroll brush, hardness or opacity, and in Spotify you can turn the wheel to change the system volume.
Another key feature of the MX Master 3 is the gesture buttons. Below where the thumb rests are buttons that can be pressed and gestured with the mouse to activate additional functions or commands. For example, on a Mac, you can press this button once to open Mission Control. Hold this button and move the mouse back to enter Exposé, or move the mouse left or right to switch desktops. The button itself can be customized for other uses, but removing it from Gesture will result in the loss of additional scrolling functionality. You can also customize how each move works with various commands and functions.
The Logitech MX Master 3 is no slouch when it comes to performance either. It’s 5x more accurate than a normal mouse, and thanks to Logitech Darkfield Tracking, the MX Master 3 can be tracked virtually and on surfaces including glass, while offering best-in-class 4000 DPI accuracy. So this mouse not only excels in applications like Photoshop, but also makes gamers happy by executing those headshots with extreme precision.

Charging the MX Master 3 is as easy as plugging a nearby USB-C cable or the included USB-C cable into the USB-C port on the front edge of the mouse. Unlike the Magic Mouse 2 debacle with the charging port underneath, you can still use the MX Master 3 while it’s plugged in and charging. When fully charged, the MX Master 3 mouse will last up to 70 days, and if you connect the USB-C cable to a suitable fast charger, you can charge the mouse in 1 minute for up to 3 hours of operation. So when you plug it in, make your coffee, and head back to your desk, the mouse has enough power to last you all day.
