Should Headshots Be Glossy Or Matte – The main shot is an 8 x 10 (usually black and white, but sometimes color) close-up of the model or actor. The picture usually covers the actor from head to shoulder. On the back of the headshot, the actor includes their acting resume (like a typical business resume), which includes details about the actor’s training and experience. Actors use headshots and resumes to get acting jobs by sending them to directors and talent agencies.
After the actor completes the photo session, he can do the important work of producing new headshots. These headboards can be made with different finishes: satin, semi-gloss or matte. They come in different styles and features such as color, black and white, borders and edges.
Should Headshots Be Glossy Or Matte
A glossy headshot is a point where the front of the image is glossy. The main image looks polished and clean with subtle light.

A matte finish is a headshot finish that isn’t as sharp and glossy as a glossy finish. While a glossy finish can be very striking, a matte is softer and flat. Matte finishes can also cost less than glossy finishes.
While the glossy finish is shiny and highlighted and the matte finish is flat, the semi-gloss finish is quite flat and shiny. A semi-gloss finish is a cross between a glossy finish and a matte finish.
Actors want their heads reprinted with a white border. This means that their photo is in the middle of the 8×10 photo surrounded by a white border. This type of headshot is usually the most popular version.
Often, the actor wants to have no border on the photo, so that the actor’s face covers the entire 8 × 10 area. When the image covers the entire area, it is said to “bleed” across the page.

Most actors choose to do black and white heads. This is the standard way to take a headshot. It’s also economical, saving actors more than color printing. However, many actors choose to take headshots in color, believing that color can help make the actor stand out and give a more accurate image of the actor.
Since headshots are essential to an actor’s success, actors should do everything they can to get their headshots right. That is why it is best to get advice from a talented agent before investing your money.

Actor — Blog — Merritt Portrait Studio
To serve my clients, it was helpful to sit down with Denver casting director Sylvia Gregory Sylvia Gregory Casting (who works with headshots every day) to learn how to create her head. Which element is the best (or worst) in your head and the answer to the question I often hear from my clients will eventually be accepted and used in the transfer process.
I would like to thank former actress Sylvia for sharing her valuable time and expertise to bring you this information. Whether you’re just starting out in your acting career or a seasoned actor looking to refresh your photography after a few years, we hope you’ll find Sylvia’s perspective and insight to help you prepare for an amazing shooting experience!
Note: All of Sylvia’s answers below are paraphrased directly from the interview – after all, I’m a photographer and I don’t claim to be a journalist!!
A Director’s Perspective on Creating Strong Actors : Jennifer (Photographer) Question: As a director, are there certain elements that draw your attention, positively or negatively?
Behind The Scenes: Retouching — N. Lalor Photography
Sylvia (Casting Director) Answer: Yes! We often put our heads on the floor during the show, so the actors’ names should be in front of their heads. This little thing helps save our knees and backs in the painful process!
The focus must be in the eyes… something must be happening in the eyes: there must be thought, intimacy, humor This picture is an introduction to how this actor will work, we want to know this person, not a caricature of this person.
It is important that your head looks like you. You don’t want us to think, “It doesn’t have a human voice at all.” I tell the actors that “on a good day” you have to take pictures while you’re watching, because if you show up looking at anything other than a shot in your head, it’s wasted.
