When a college student decided to start a free lawn mowing business this past fall, the goal was to improve the lives of others.

With over 500 lawns mowed for free so far, the project has accomplished that task. But it also had another unexpected benefit: It gave Rodney Smith Jr., its creator, new purpose in his personal life.

Smith, 26, got the idea when he saw an old man mowing a lawn in his hometown of Huntsville, Alabama. He decided on the spot to cut the man’s grass and other poor people’s grass to revive the society.
After he reached his goal of mowing 100 lawns in just one month, he decided to start Raising People Lawn Care Service with his friend Terence Stroy. Smith, who moved to Alabama from Bermuda when she was 16, opened chapters in Bermuda and Huntsville in January. It has now grown to six chapters and has expanded to Michigan, Florida, West Virginia and Ohio.
The aim is to provide free childcare for the elderly, disabled, single mothers and the elderly using local volunteers and to provide good role models for young children and to emphasize philanthropy.
“I felt like we had to get kids involved to show the importance of giving back to the community and to show the importance of giving back to the community,” Smith told NBC News. “We give them a little responsibility and build their behavior.”

The company’s rapid growth prompted her to pursue a master’s degree in social work at Alabama A&M after earning her bachelor’s degree in computer science on May 6. School program.

Smith was able to fit his work into running the company, especially on weekends and mowing the lawn between classes. He was the first in his family to graduate from college.

“It’s a huge relief,” Roche told NBC News. “I live on a fixed income and I don’t know how to manage this summer.”

Since she began soliciting local volunteers through word of mouth and the organization’s Facebook page in April, chapters have now opened in Michigan and Florida, with two more slated to open in Ohio and West Virginia.
“They teach them the right way to do things and insist that it makes them feel good in return,” says Roche. “I think it’s great that Rodney has a good role model for some kids who might not necessarily have one, he’s a young man who is passionate about giving and helping others.
Hundreds of emails were sent from people interested in starting a chapter in their hometown. They must go through an interview and background check process to get approved, Smith said.
Smith has heard complaints from local lawn care businesses, but said the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

“I’ve seen some guys say something sarcastic, but the people we help can’t mow their lawns anyway, so I don’t know why they’re upset,” Smith said.
The organization plans to soon include girls in its volunteer group as part of its continuous expansion. Smith hopes to carry the freedom of his homeland to his new home.
