Smith, 26, got the idea when he saw an old man struggling to mow the lawn in his hometown of Huntsville, Alabama. He immediately decided that he would cut the man’s lawn, along with the lawns of others in need, as a way to give back to the community.
Once he achieved his goal of cutting 100 followers in less than a month, he decided to start Men’s Lawn Care Services with his friend Terrence Stroy. Smith, who moved to Alabama from Bermuda when he was 16, began establishing branches in Bermuda and Huntsville in January. The goal is to provide free lawn care to the elderly, disabled, single mothers and veterans using local volunteers and to provide boys with positive role models by emphasizing service of grace.
“I thought we should get kids involved and give them something to do and show the importance of giving back to the community,” Smith told NBC News. “We gave them responsibility and empowered them.”
