Four of the 34 students were sons of Charles Calvert.
In 1862, the Maryland State Legislature agreed to accept a land grant for the Maryland Agricultural College to establish a land grant university. The school was to offer training in agriculture and mechanical engineering as well as education. Military training was also a requirement of the Morrill Act.
After the war, due to financial difficulties, the school operated as a preparatory school for two years. The school reopened in 1867 when the legislature appropriated half of the school and appropriated the funds. Before Augustine J. Smith became president in 1883, the school was still struggling financially. His efforts encouraged farmers, students and state legislatures to send their children to school. Although unsuccessful, the legislature began using the school for government functions such as disease control on local farms, Maryland Weather Bureau monitoring, forage inspections, and completing geological surveys. A federally funded agricultural experiment station led to the creation of the university farm along with the Rossborough Inn to create the station.
